Freshwater Fish of Haida Gwaii

Haida Gwaii is a place unlike any other in North America. Haida Gwaii’s exceptional climate and location have made the region rich in both saltwater and freshwater fish. In fact, Peregrine Lodge’s access to these robust fishing grounds is what makes our lodge so unique!

Dolly Varden Trout

Dolly Varden trout have a dark blue or olive-green back, silvery sides, and a white belly with spots around their body. Dolly Varden are an aggressive fish and strong fighters. They can live up to eight years.

Cutthroat Trout

Coastal Cutthroat trout usually have a distinctive red or orange streak under their lower jaw. This may not be obvious on those found in salt water. Coastal Cutthroat differ from all other trout by having many spots all over the sides of the body, on the head and often on the belly and fins.

Catch-and-Release Tips

To preserve the conservation of freshwater species, freshwater fishing is limited to catch-and-release fishing. Here are some tips:

  • Play and land the fish as quickly as possible.
  • Keep the fish in the water while removing the hook. If this isn’t possible, return the fish to the water as quick as possible.
  • Never just throw a fish back into the water; revive an exhausted fish by holding it level in the water until it swims away on its own.
  • If you have to handle the fish first, wet your hands and be as gently as you can.
  • Use barbless hooks.

Fishing License

If you choose to freshwater fish during your stay with us, a freshwater licence is required. Make sure you have your fishing license ready and with you at all times. Fishing licenses can be purchased online, but you must print it and carry it while fishing.

The government of Canada has regulations on sport fishing in Canadian fisheries waters of the Pacific Ocean. All Chinook, Lingcod and halibut catch must be recorded on your license in ink. For more information on sport fishing regulations in British Columbia, refer to the Government of Canada’s site.
