At Peregrine Lodge, we treat all our guests like family. From the moment they check-in with us in Vancouver, to the time when their Sikorsky helicopter lifts off from Masset, and right until they open their last vaccum-pack of delicious salmon, we go out of our way to ensure that every guest experiences the fishing adventure of a lifetime. We believe that it is this commitment to friendly service that keeps our guests coming back. And so it is truly special when we get the opportunity to welcome back a group of guests year after year, season after season.

This past week, on our 12th trip of the season, we had the pleasure of doing just that. For the past three days, we were proud to welcome the Toigo family to the lodge for the 25th time. The Toigos have been bringing their family and friends to Peregrine since our very first season, to the extent that they truly do feel like family. We feel privileged to have watched many of them grow up – it was even more rewarding then, to lead them to tons of big fish.

And there certainly were enough big fish to go around. We were absolutely delighted to see the biggest fish of the season so far caught this trip. Pat Quinn, fishing with guide Johnny Williams, was trolling just past the Mazeredo Islands on Wednesday morning when he hooked into a giant 61-pound fish! After a 45-minute battle, Pat successfully landed the salmon. Clearly, Pat knows just as much about fishing as he does about hockey!

Pat’s fish was just one of an impressive 12 tyees caught this trip. Geoffrey Lubert, another good friend of the lodge, caught and released a beautiful 46-pound spring on his first day of fishing. Geoff was angling right at the tip of Snake Rock with guide Mike Jones when the fish bit. It struck his top line, at about 12 pulls off the back – right where the big ones are supposed to bite. After a frantic fight, the Peregrine fleet heard Mike’s excited voice over the radio, announcing the measurements of Geoff’s beautiful fish. The next biggest fish was a gorgeous 43-pound spring caught and released by Dominic Toigo. Bruce Allen landed a 40-pound hog on the last day of fishing, while Jake Edwards started the trip off strong with a 35-pounder. Jon Toigo also caught a 35-pounder, and with the help of guide Steph Olson, released the fish to continue its journey. Brian Lougheed repeatedly snuck into the tyee club, bringing 30 pounders back to the dock on both of his first two days of fishing. Tyees were also caught by guests Ron Delorme (30), James Hepler (33), Roy Toigo (31), and Warren Erhart (31).

The coho continue to grow in size. We saw a number of gorgeous 10-13 pound coho at the dock. These fish are notoriously feisty, and their meat is highly prized. We also see the occasional sockeye and chum salmon in the mix.

As we say goodbye to the Toigo family, we look forward to extending a warm welcome to our next group of guests. The fishing is absolutely outstanding – if you have been holding off, this is certainly the time to visit us in Haida Gwaii. Who knows – you might just start a new family tradition.
