After a magnificent first night dining experience, the guests of our ninth trip of the year awoke to perfectly calm seas, continuing a fantastic streak of nice weather! The first day of fishing was equally superb, with all boats catching an astounding amount of fish. With a healthy mix of Chinooks and Cohos, we once again had boats with over 30 salmon caught by mid morning alone. One of the most notable catches of the day, and indeed the trip, went to 9 year-old Layne Sjolie, who landed a feisty 24 pound Chinook with no help from his dad Rod.

However, when it came to big trophy fish, the real action did not get going until the next morning, when David Meikrantz hooked into a gorgeous Chinook. Having just arrived on the fishing grounds, the time was around 8:00 am, and he was trolling with his guide “Johnny 5.0” off of Green Point when the Tyee bit. After a fight that lasted close to an hour, they got the beast of a fish in the boat and measured it to be a massive 45 pounds! For David, in his first trip to Haida Gwaii, it was the first big fish of his life, calling for a big celebration that night. However, according to Johnny, it was anything but beginner’s luck, as he was able to bring it in like an old pro, with very little coaching!

Over the course of that second day, and continuing into the final day, the big fish just continued to roll in, keeping up the feverish pace that has blessed us over the past couple of weeks. Another notable catch later that second morning was made jointly by Guylaine Boivin and Audrey Paradis, who simultaneously hooked a 35-pound Chinook. Initially thinking they had a double header, they both fought hard for over half an hour, working together under the direction of their guide Cory to land this beautiful Tyee.

With spectacular 34-pound Tyees also caught by Judy Brandon and Nicholas Dagg, it was a high-paced end to another great trip here at Peregrine Lodge!
