Haida Gwaii is located in the super salmon highway, where migrating salmon cross through our fishing grounds as they make their journey home to their spawning grounds every year. It is where migrating fish return to their natal stream.

The super salmon highway in Haida Gwaii offers access to high traffic fishing grounds. With the abundance of salmon runs in Haida Gwaii, expect to catch a variety of salmon travelling the super salmon highway.

Haida Gwaii is home to 5 species of salmon:
- Chinook – The largest Pacific salmon and can weigh over 100lbs, but average around 30 pounds. Nicknamed “blackmouth” due to their gum lines that look like they are painted with black pigment. They are known for their swimming endurance and fantastic strength
- Coho – Provide incredible challenges for anglers because they are hard to catch and leap up and sideways. They’re high oil content make them a favorite on the table.
- Pink – The smallest of the salmon, they are likely to travel in schools for protection. They have the shortest lifespan averaging around two years.
- Chum – Abundant and well distributed throughout the Pacific Coast. They offer a milder taste and soft flesh. They are the last of the Pacific salmon species to return to freshwater to spawn.
- Sockeye –They weigh from 5 to 12 pounds and spend a large part of their lives in freshwater. They are the most commercially sought-after Pacific salmon.
Pacific Salmon
The waters of Haida Gwaii are home to large schools of herring and other bait fish that keep migrating salmon in the area while they feed in preparation for their journey to their natal rivers and streams to spawn.
Nearly all salmon make a stopover for a final feeding in the waters around Haida Gwaii before continuing their journey home. Naden Harbour is in the crossroad of migration routes for maturing salmon returning to spawn in the rivers.
Our fishing grounds give guests access to unlimited runs of Chinook and Coho salmon that travel through the super salmon highway all season long on their migratory routes home to their natal rivers and streams.
