Game Salmon of Haida Gwaii

Haida Gwaii offers magnificent salmon game fishing opportunities for anglers of all levels. Below are species of salmon that you can expect to find in Haida Gwaii.

Chinook
The Chinook salmon is BC sport fishing’s crown jewel. They have a high oil content, making them one of the best tasting salmons. They are large in size and are also known as King or Spring salmon.

Coho

Known for being one of the most prized BC salmon species due to its delicious rich meat. Coho are known for their aggressive and moody behavior that provides a great challenge for anglers. They can weight between 6 to 14 pounds but can reach up to 25 pounds.

Pink

The smallest of the BC salmon species. Their large runs provide consistent sport fishery for anglers. Pink salmon are the easiest to catch out of all the BC salmon despite being an aggressive fish. Pink salmon also provide outstanding fly-fishing opportunities for anglers.

 Sockeye

Sockeye salmon can weigh up to 15 pounds and during the spawning process, they are primarily red in colour. They are also known as Red salmon, Kokanee salmon or Blueback salmon.

Chum

Chum salmon are silvery blue-green in colour with a paler belly and spotting in a darker shade. They change to a dark olive green colour when they move into fresh water.

Salmon Processing

At Peregrine Lodge, we understand that enjoying your salmon at the table is equally as important as the thrill of catching a salmon. We clean, fillet, vacuum pack, flash freeze and box your fish to take home.

Guests can also send their fish to St. Jean’s Smokehouse & Cannery for fish processing services such as smoking, canning and steaking. Please allow at least 8 weeks for delivery before following up on your order if you place an order with them.

Your fish is tagged the moment it is caught; it either goes home with your or goes to St. Jean’s Smokehouse & Cannery. It is recommended that guests have an idea in mind of how they’d like their fish processed when they are catching them.

Fishing License

Before arriving at Peregrine Lodge, it is required of all guests to have a fishing license and salmon conservation stamp. Your fishing license should be with you at all times and must be with you while transporting your fish home.

We offer fully-guided fishing, meaning that you will not be out on the water alone. Each of our guides understands that fishing comes from the full experience, not just from the catch itself. Additionally, our guides are more than happy to offer suggestions for fish processing, but generally a salmon over 30 pounds or greater is ideal for canning or smoking at St. Jean’s Smokehouse and Cannery. A Chinook or Coho salmon is great for barbecuing at home.
